Grumman G-50 Hellcat (F6F-5)

A new and improved descendant of the Wildcat, the Hellcat or “Grinning Monster” was docile and aerobatic.

The Hellcat was powered by the same engine as the Thunderbolt, Corsair and Marauder.  The pilot is positioned high above the wing, giving a near 360º view and made for easy taxiing.

In 1943, Grumman held the record for building 620 aircraft in one month.

The nickname “Grumman Ironworks” was the result of the Hellcat’s brute strength.  Known for carrier landings under great adversity, the F6F dropped up to 21 feet per second onto heaving carrier decks, in the dark, with no fuel and fatigued pilots.

Hellcats downed more enemy aircraft (5,156) produced more aces (306) and had the highest kill ratio (19:1) of any allied aircraft.

The Hellcat saw it’s first action on Marcus Island on August 31, 1943.

Famous for the Marianas “Turkey Shoot”, Hellcats confirmed 354 kills to only 18 losses.

The Hellcat’s guns carried 200 rounds each, a 15 second supply.
